Overview
HP EVA disk arrays (HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array Family) is a middle range disk storage systems. As an algorithm for data distribution they are using an algorithm which is used in arrays hsg80. Array controllers works under VxWorks OS, which is stored in the CF flash card in array Glossary Link controller and can be updated with firmware. Firmware update can change data distribution algorithm.

First generation of arrays EVA3000/5000 works as active/passive controllers, new active/active firmware increased array performance up to 30%. In active/passive firmware latency were high when packet sent to passive controller traveled via mirror port to active controller which is owner of LUNs. For active/active firmware been assigned names hsv101 and hsv111.

EVA4400 by characteristics is comparable to entry-level MSA2324 arrays and MSA P2000, but gives more IOPS. This occurs because arrays EVA have more powerful controller, MSA RAID controller based on a Smart Array controller p-series (drives in RAID groups from MSA2000 can be imported to RAID groups of Smart Array controllers p-series, as wheel old Smart Array controllers can read RAIDs from MSA500\1000\1500).

Introduction to vRAID
For this time RAID become more popular, you can use RAID0,1,10 and 5 at home. To build RAID, you need a to assign disks to the disk group, for example a disk group from 4 disks can contain RAID0,1,10 or 5, but only one type of RAID. Instead of usual RAID controllers, EVA RAID controllers using virtual RAID. VRAID can place many RAID groups at the same disk. There are some limitations for the disk groups: minimal amount of disks in group is 8 and maximum is 256. All 256 disks can contain many LUNs with various RAID types.

Mixing various types of vRAIDs in the same group is not recommended because vRAID 5 and 6 can speed down the faster vRAIDs 0 and 1 because they need in a lot of IOPS.

Array structures
EVA disk arrays contain Default disk group with minimum of 8 disks (minimum for initialization of array and disk group creation, but can contain only 6 disks), this disk group contain LUN0 which is reserved for array logs and management commands from Command View EVA. Default disk group also contain array configuration such as vRAID types, disk labels and assignations to the disk groups, WWN of array. This information can be placed on 6-8 disks (depending on array configuration) and use 32-64 Mb of disk space (depending on generation of array). This information is mirrored between disks. This technology protects from lose of array configuration and array can reconstruct data of vRAIDs even if disks were mixed between shelves.

Disk group initialization
When you creating the disk group, on all selected disk place system label to assign them to this disk group, and in background mode all disks formating with a Glossary Link block size of 2Mb for the future placement in it LUNs with various vRAIDs. All disks in new disk group divided to sub-groups by 6-11 disks and to all subgroups assigned unique RSS (redundant storage set) number.
Numbering of the RSS is done by algorithm which tries to don`t place more then one the sub-group in a single enclosure. This technology protects data from the failure of an entire disk shelve, if shelves of more than 8 and the array have been properly initialized.

Installation Command View EVA
Management of EVA array works via SAN, management commands sends to the LUN0. So managmen need to have FC HBA connected to FC.
You have to use Command View EVA to manage EVA; here is a minimal requirements for Command View EVA:

For a software installation you have to be member of Local Administrators or Domain administrators group.
Command View EVA includes following components:
Command View EVA – WEB interface for array management
Command View EVAPerf – EVA performance monitor that integrates with Windows perfmon
Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU) – Glossary Link CLI management tool for various OSs
Storage Management Initiative Specification for Enterprise Virtual Array (SMI-S EVA) – component for support ANSI INCITS 388-2004 standard, that developed by Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA).

After installation is accomplished you should assign users to the following groups:
HP Storage Admins – a group of array administrators
HP Storage Users – a group of array users, users can only view array configuration

From the Command View EVA 7.0, you can use Continuous Access and Business Copy for 180 days as trial.
To enter in Command View EVA you have to use Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1, Mozilla 1.7.3, Firefox 1.0.7. To access in CV EVA, type following address in your browser https://host_name:2372/command_view_eva, where host_name – is a DNS name or IP-address of computer where Command View is installed.

How you should add HBAs of computer with Command View EVA to the zones with array ports. After it`s done you can begin array initialization process.
